Preparing a placemaking strategy for London’s Shoe Lane

Steer prepared this strategy for the City of London Corporation to guide public realm improvements in the Shoe Lane Quarter of the city. A core component of the work was to understand and accommodate ongoing change related to large development sites, and the future opening of Crossrail nearby in Farringdon.

Extensive analysis was undertaken to support and shape the strategy. This covered various aspects including land use, transport infrastructure, movement routes, public spaces, heritage context, landscape, massing, and sunlight studies.

The analysis informed a design brief leading to a high-level vision and guiding principles. Ultimately these will help create a high quality public realm which will also provide a consistent and coherent identity for the entire quarter.
