Optimising the Ayacucho tram system in Medellín, Colombia

The Ayacucho Tram in Medellín was the first tram service to operate on the Medellín Metro system in Colombia, beginning its service in 2016.

Our team were asked to make an integration between the operational plan and the interaction with other transport modes to identify the most efficient transport service.

Using existing data about the tram system and surrounding areas, we developed the modelling scenarios with dynamic simulation software, PTV VISSIM, beginning with the evaluation of the present situation and then identifying future scenarios with alternatives to optimization of the Ayacucho's tram. We also used PTV Viswalk to develop a detailed pedestrian modelling of each of the nine stations.

As a result of our analysis, we provided the client with:

  • an evaluation of planning alternatives and traffic signalling optimisation for the corridor;
  • a proposal of interventions; and
  • a proposal of traffic management options and traffic security actions.
