Our commitment to Net Zero
Steer is committed to successfully operating as a Net Zero Carbon company by 2025.
In 2022, Steer became Carbon Neutral. We will be Net Zero Carbon by 2025 and Near Zero Carbon by 2030, through less than 50% offsetting, and only with offsetting that is local to our operations, and that is consistent with our social values.
Our aim is to embody decarbonisation and wider sustainable development goals through all aspects of how we work, in our strategies, our planning, and our day-to-day activities.
We are committed to using our expertise to help our clients and wider society transition to a sustainable, low carbon future. This means working alongside our clients and partners, advising and guiding with expertise, knowledge and data, to address the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities of decarbonisation across all of our services, sectors and geographies.
Our Net Zero Carbon by 2025 commitment is a commitment developed by our employees, for our employees, who work in partnership with our clients across infrastructure, places, people and transport, taking us all towards a Net Zero Carbon future.
Our role in helping people, places and economies thrive means that we take our social and cultural responsibilities seriously and that they form an important part of our culture and values. We believe that actions speak louder than words, and therefore have annual measurable targets across all social impact areas.
We are an employee-owned, independent, geographically diverse, talented company able to forge our own vibrant future.
We aim to be a company where the best global talent wants to work and can contribute, develop and succeed.
This means that EDI is vitally important to us. Being more representative means, we are better able to serve our clients and the communities in which we operate, bringing a wider range of experiences and views to our work. We are committed to providing equality of opportunity and reward for all our employees, so we must safeguard a culture that ensures equality, diversity and inclusivity.
Measuring our EDI goals
To measure our EDI performance, we use the UK Equalities Act 2010 framework. This framework covers nine ‘protected characteristics’ – age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage & civil partnership, sexual orientation, pregnancy & maternity, race, religion & belief and gender.
To further ensure progress, we measure ourselves in all our geographies against available benchmarks for:

Steer values all efforts to positively add social value by contributing to the long-term wellbeing and resilience of individuals, communities and society in general. Our focus on social value can be categorised into four key themes:
Not only do we actively encourage our employees to engage in activities that address these four themes, we also advise clients on projects that ultimately aim to have a positive social value effect.
In support of adding social value, employees benefit from five days of volunteering leave each year, plus we have a donation-matching initiative available for those who undertake fundraising activity.
Across the globe, our employees have been involved in charitable and volunteering projects of social value and, as a company, we have undertaken hundreds of projects that address social value issues in some form. A small snapshot of client projects includes:
