Active transport

Increasing walking and cycling addresses many of the transport challenges facing our communities. Active travel is at the heart of realising important public health objectives, including the need to reduce air pollution and increase levels of physical activity, as well as wider decarbonisation, social and economic objectives.

We work with clients to overcome the challenges of creating environments where walking and cycling are safe and appealing and combine our skills in strategy, analysis and design to deliver projects that help create vibrant communities and livable neighbourhoods.

Steer offers expertise across all stages of developing and implementing walking and cycling projects. We advise on active travel planning, strategy, business case development, engineering design, promotion, training, consultation and monitoring and evaluation. Our consultants are trusted advisors to national, regional and local governments seeking to increase levels of active travel around the world. We work in partnership with clients, communities and stakeholders to develop solutions that are tailored to specific communities and locations.

How we can help you

We work directly with local authorities, communities and developers on active travel plans or as part of multi-disciplinary teams, advising on the walking and cycling components of major schemes. Our core offer includes:

  • Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA)
  • Walking and cycling strategy
  • Infrastructure design and audit

  • Cycle hire, bikeshare and micro-transit feasibility and planning
  • Cycle training and promotion
