Mario

I started at Steer in June 2012, fresh out of college. I actually stumbled backwards into this job — I was talking to an employee from the Boston office at a career fair to practice my introduction for the firms I was targeting. As luck would have it, I got caught up talking to them and then just three weeks after graduation, I was starting my career in Steer’s Boston office.

In Boston, I had the opportunity to work in one of my favourite subject areas, high-speed rail. The first project I worked on was the Atlanta to Charlotte Passenger Rail Corridor Investment Plan where I got to build the diversion models. Coincidentally, I was very familiar with this corridor as I have family on both ends and have spent many road trips driving between the two.

Over the next couple of years in Boston, I continued to develop my technical skills while learning to manage projects and broadening my interests to include urban transit and marine transit (ferries). A couple of years later, in 2014, I moved to New York City to be closer to my partner and became the second member of the NYC office.

In the New York office, I started managing the ferry projects I had been involved in from Boston. Shortly after moving to the city, we completed the Citywide Ferry study and the Mayor announced the expansion of the ferry service that would become the current NYC Ferry. It has been amazing to have the freedom to shape my career, to follow my interests and to work on projects that have literally been in my backyard!
