Steer Leads Multi-Consultancy Team on Culture Mile BID’s New Vision for a Connected, Greener Neighbourhood

The strategy aims to transform the City of London’s Culture Mile into a more connected, accessible, and vibrant cultural neighbourhood.

By Steer

The Culture Mile Business Improvement District (BID) has unveiled an ambitious Public Realm Vision and Strategy, developed in collaboration with Steer and AR Urbanism. The strategy aims to transform the City of London’s Culture Mile into a more connected, accessible, and vibrant cultural neighbourhood, aligning with the City of London Corporation’s City Plan 2040 and Destination City initiatives.

Steer played a central role in this project, leading a comprehensive programme of engagement with stakeholders, assessing existing conditions, and crafting a detailed framework for improvements. The vision includes enhanced pedestrianised zones, increased green spaces, and versatile cultural areas, supported by a £9 million investment in the area from levy-paying businesses over the next five years.

Julie Bowerman, Director at Steer, commented:

“Working with stakeholders across the Culture Mile revealed a shared vision for a more connected and inclusive neighbourhood. By bringing together new programmes and enhancing existing assets, we’ve created an inspiring framework for the future. We’re proud to have been part of this transformational project and look forward to seeing these plans come to life.”

The Culture Mile stretches from Farringdon to Moorgate, encompassing landmarks such as the Barbican Centre and the future London Museum. As the area evolves, the Public Realm Vision will guide the creation of safer, more sustainable spaces that support cultural engagement, local businesses, and community connection.
