Steer named top-performing consultancy in the 2025 Women in Transport Equity Index

Steer has been recognised as the highest-scoring consultancy in the 2025 Women in Transport Equity Index, highlighting our ongoing work to promote gender equity for our colleagues in the workplace and across the wider UK transport sector.

Led by Women in Transport in partnership with WORK180, the Equity Index is the only initiative of its kind dedicated to benchmarking gender representation, equity, and inclusion practices across the transport industry.

Participating organisations were evaluated across a wide range of criteria, including:

  • Action on gender pay equity
  • Flexible working options and inclusive workplace culture
  • Broader equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) policies
  • Representation of women throughout the workforce and in leadership roles

Steer was recognised for introducing formal mentoring programmes, alongside more equitable recruitment and progression pathways, resulting in more women thriving in technical and leadership positions.

Full list of category winners:

  • Rail – London North Eastern Railway (LNER)
  • Bus & Coach – First Bus
  • Consultancy – Steer
  • Cycling – Sustrans
  • Logistics – Wm Armstrong
  • Maritime – Mintra
  • Cross-Sector – Campaign for Better Transport
  • Government/NGO – West Yorkshire Combined Authority

Elsie Blundell MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Women in Transport, said: “The Equity Index is an important step forward in our mission to create a more inclusive and representative transport sector. By measuring where we are and holding ourselves to account, we give ourselves the tools to drive real change.”

Hugh Jones, CEO of Steer, said: “This accolade is a reflection of the steps we’ve taken so far. It’s also a reminder that we must keep going, especially in light of the wider context highlighted by the Equity Index, which shows that key indicators of inclusion, pay equality and leadership progression within the transport industry have stagnated or worsened since 2023. We remain committed to listening, learning, and acting.”
