The City of Westminster first introduced a walking strategy in 2004. With a growing population and forthcoming major schemes such as Crossrail and Crossrail 2, the number of people walking on Westminster’s streets is set to increase further. This strategy covered the period to 2030, the potential opening year of Crossrail 2.
The strategy set out how the Council will deliver improvements to enhance Westminster’s walking environment and promote more and longer walking trips.
Our team worked collaboratively with Westminster City Council and stakeholders to set the vision, agree objectives and to identify the key issues and opportunities for providing sufficient capacity for people walking in Westminster, encouraging more walking, and making every day walking journeys more comfortable.
The completed strategy document was informed by an extensive data analysis exercise, stakeholder engagement and a policy review. It concluded with a programme of schemes and initiatives for delivering the vision, and an associated monitoring and evaluation plan.
The draft strategy went to public consultation in 2016-17 and was launched by the council in late 2017. The strategy provides the basis for future walking improvements schemes in Westminster and helps to set the direction for new development in the city.
