Active travel

Active travel

Creating vibrant, healthier, and more connected communities.

Large group of cyclists

Walking and cycling are vital components of sustainable, efficient, and healthy transport systems. Active travel not only reduces congestion and lowers emissions but also enhances our health and well-being. Additionally, it fosters economic growth and promotes a more equitable society.

Creating safe, appealing, and accessible environments for walking and cycling requires careful planning, investment, and collaboration. At Steer, we work with communities, local authorities, governments and developers to design and implement practical, people-centred active travel solutions. Our expertise spans network planning and strategy, designing and delivering transformational infrastructure and behaviour change programmes. We ensure our clients achieve their sustainable mobility goals.

Our expertise

  • Active travel strategy & network planning – Developing policies and investment plans that enable active travel.
  • Infrastructure design & audit – Creating safe, accessible, and high-quality walking and cycling environments.
  • Design guidance and design assurance – Ensuring our clients have the tools to ensure consistency in design excellence.
  • Stakeholder & public engagement – Ensuring buy-in through consultation, engagement, and co-design.
  • Cycle hire, bike share & micro-mobility – Supporting feasibility, planning, and implementation.
  • Behaviour change & travel demand management (TDM) – Getting people travelling actively through targeted programs and interventions.
  • Monitoring & evaluation – Measuring the impact of active travel investments and initiatives.

From city-wide cycling networks to first-mile/last-mile solutions, we help clients improve accessibility, secure funding, and create more liveable, healthier places. Whether shaping national policies, advising on new infrastructure, or delivering large-scale behaviour change programmes, we provide solutions that drive measurable, long-term change.
