Design for Movement team wins Avenza Award for electronic mapping

Our Swindon Journey Planner has been recognised as the best entry in the British Cartographic Society Annual Awards.

By Steer

Steer Davies Gleave is delighted to announce that the Swindon Journey Planner, created by our Design for Movement team, has been recognised as the best entry in the British Cartographic Society Annual Awards, in the category of Avenza Award for Electronic Mapping.

SDG created a website, journey planner and cartographic outputs to support Swindon Borough Council's  Local Sustainable Transport fund (LSTF) project, which promotes sustainable travel alternatives to employees working in Swindon town centre.

About the journey planner and interactive mapping

The state of the art journey planner and interactive map platform builds on OpenStreetMap data (osm.org) to deliver fast and accurate trip routing overlaid on a city-wide base map. This base-map has been stylised to provide a consistent and, therefore, intuitive user experience across print and digital platforms and it is dynamically generated which guarantees it is cost effective to update in print and digitally. A suite of printed maps – including city-wide and local area cycle and travel guides – forms part of the core project outputs.

The journey planner is built around a responsive design template, which works seamlessly across desktops, smartphones and tablets. The planner provides multi-modal, door-to-door travel options generated by open-source data. A user-centred design ensures the Council team can easily communicate the health and cost benefits of alternative travel modes to employees during personal travel planning sessions.

About the Award

The British Cartographic Society (founded in 1963, and celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year) has been recognising good map design through their Awards since 1978. The Awards system is designed to encourage entrants across all cartographic disciplines, and to showcase products created through traditional, new or experimental techniques. They aim to promote the best of cartographic products and highlight excellent cartographic design in the UK and abroad.
